Learning the Basics

My DataBank accommodates the basic functions typical in a database environment including adding, viewing, filtering, editing, and removing multiple records. If you are new to webOS, it is highly recommended that you watch the following YouTube video demonstration to help you familiarize and learn how to navigate around My DataBank within a webOS environment.

Using webOS involves learning new and unique standards that are necessary to help you navigate around a webOS environment. Most importantly, how to return to the previous screen which requires a back-swipe gesture across the gesture area or how to delete records by pressing on a record and swiping it to the side until the delete button for confirmation is revealed.

Learning to create your own Custom Category

My DataBank provides several pre-defined categories upon installation which include Blood Pressure, Home - To Do, Favorite Restaurants, and many more. However, the true power of My DataBank comes with the ability to allow you to customize all your existing Categories or design a new Category right from scratch!

This kind of flexibility allows you to expand beyond the default Categories and lets you take control many aspects of the information you wish to maintain, analyze, log, and store directly from your own mobile device.

Before we dive into the actual steps of designing your own Category, it might be helpful to visualize the relationship of how Categories and Items are bound.

This illustration shows the heirarchy and the basic relationship between Categories and Items. As shown, the Categories to Items is a one-to-many relationship. That is, a single category is linked across multiple items joined by a common field or the Unique Identifier (categorytypeid) which is defined for each category .

To begin, you'll need to create and define your own category:

From the Category List screen, tap on the Add button.

After tapping on the Add button, you will be forwarded to the Category Setup screen. At minimum, the following items under the Category Setup screen should be completed:

1. Category Title
2. One or more Field Titles (e.g. Text 1, Integer 1, Date 1, Bit 1, Text 2, etc.)

For example, if you wanted to create a category to store your collection of favorite shopping stores, you could do the following:

For the Category Title, enter Favorite Shopping Stores.
For the Text 1 Field Title, enter Address.

Upon completion, tap on the Update button to accept your changes.

This will take you to the previous screen, Item List. From this screen, you can begin entering items for your new category by tapping on the Add button.

After tapping on the Add button, you will be forwarded to the Item Detail screen which will allow you to enter any data you have setup from the Category Setup screen. At minimum, the Item Title should be entered.

For example, you could enter Best Buy as the Item Title as one of your favorite shopping stores. In the Address field created above, you could enter the location for this shopping store.

Upon completion, tap on the Update button to accept your changes. This will take you to the previous screen, Item List.

Note: If you are currently in the actual store, you can tap the Get GPS Coordinates button from the Item Detail screen to acquire the longitude and latitude values of your location. The Send Value button can later be tapped to show the actual location of the store through Google Maps.

Once you have mastered the simplicity of creating your own categories and adding items for your custom categories, you can add additional fields and modify preferences from the Category Setup screen to improve immediate access to your information and to enable data entry for other types of data you would like to include.

For advanced users, visit the Advanced section of this documentation and explore Query Filtering and Basic Formula Calculation features. This allows you to filter the list of information you want to see and automatically complete field values based on basic arithmetic logic.

Also, feel free to clone, examine, and learn from some of the designs that define the default categories created by My DataBank.
